The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
